Death rate in the Philippines

2020

In 2020, a total of 613,936 deaths were registered in the Philippines, a decline of -10% from 620,414 in 2019. This is equivalent to a crude death rate of 565.52 deaths per 100,000 population, which is lower than the previous year's rate of 570.38 deaths per 100,000 population.

WEB SPECIFIC DEATH RATE

The web specific death rate (WSDR) is a measure of the risk of exposure of certain classes or groups to particular diseases. It is calculated by dividing the number of deaths from a specific cause by the number of people in the population who are at risk of dying from that cause. The WSDR can be used to identify populations that are at high risk for particular diseases and to develop interventions to reduce the risk of death from those diseases.

In the Philippines, the WSDR for ischaemic heart disease (IHD) was 158.56 deaths per 100,000 population in 2020. This is higher than the global average of 128.5 deaths per 100,000 population. The WSDR for neoplasms (cancers) was 118.71 deaths per 100,000 population in 2020. This is also higher than the global average of 109.6 deaths per 100,000 population.

2021

In 2021, a total of 879,429 deaths were registered in the Philippines, an increase of 43.2% from 613,936 in 2020. This is equivalent to a crude death rate of 807.92 deaths per 100,000 population, which is significantly higher than the previous year's rate of 565.52 deaths per 100,000 population.

The top three causes of death in the country from January to November of 2023 were ischaemic heart diseases, neoplasms, and cerebrovascular.

Conclusion

The death rate in the Philippines has been increasing in recent years. This is due to a number of factors, including the aging population, the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The government is taking steps to address this issue, including investing in healthcare and promoting healthy lifestyles. However, more needs to be done to reduce the death rate in the Philippines.
