Edmonton Oilers beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in double overtime
Brett Zach scored the game-winning goal and the Edmonton Oilers beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in double overtime, taking a 1-0 series lead.
Zach scored at 10:12 of the second overtime, tapping in a rebound past Devils goaltender Akira Schmid.
The goal came after the Oilers had killed off a penalty to Tyson Barrie, who was called for holding at 7:12 of overtime.
The Oilers outshot the Devils 45-29, but it was the Devils who took the early lead when Jesper Bratt scored just 2:24 into the game.
Connor McDavid tied the game for the Oilers on a power play at 6:37 of the first period, and then Zach gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead at 10:05 of the first period.
The Devils tied the game again on a goal by Michael McLeod at 14:37 of the first period, and then took a 3-2 lead on a goal by Jesper Boqvist at 10:35 of the second period.
Zach tied the game again for the Oilers at 16:11 of the second period, and then McDavid gave the Oilers a 4-3 lead at 6:34 of the third period.
The Devils tied the game again on a goal by Ondrej Palat at 13:27 of the third period, but Zach's goal in double overtime gave the Oilers the win.
Game 2 of the series is at Rogers Place Saturday night at 8:00pm.
