European participation
Manchester United have more often than not across their history been in the European Cup or Champions League. However, they have had some notable campaigns in the UEFA Europa League, most recently reaching the semi-finals in 2020-21.
2016-17 season
By virtue of winning the 2015-16 FA Cup compounded by a fifth-place finish in the Premier League that season, United started their 2016-17 European campaign in the Europa League third qualifying round. They comfortably saw off Feyenoord over two legs before a tougher test against FC Zorya Luhansk in the play-off round, winning 2-0 at Old Trafford after a 1-1 draw in Ukraine. United were then given a favourable group stage draw, alongside Feyenoord, Fenerbahce and Zorya Luhansk again. They won four of their six matches to finish top of the group, ahead of Feyenoord.
